Since commencing with Landcare at the end of May, Sarah has been systematically reviewing all Landcare’s project data from 2007 through to the present. Not surprisingly, Landcare’s new Project Inventory is looking very impressive (90 projects and counting!) and is almost complete.
Simultaneously, work has begun to standardise past Cockatube installation data and enter more recent installation data. This will form the basis of a new database that will encompass installation data, maintenance and monitoring of Cockatubes.
In the coming weeks, discussions will be held with colleagues from the Peel Harvey Catchment Council and the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale regarding different database and mapping software to determine the best approach for managing, displaying and analysing Landcare SJ’s multitude of data!
But it’s not all dry data stuff! Site visits are planned for November throughout S.J. With the help of Landcare Officer Kristy Gregory, Sarah aims to plot those sites not already captured for mapping.
So if you are a private landholder who has Landcare works done on your property, we may be calling you to see if we can come and visit and map your site with our trusty GPS!
There was also some short-lived excitement when a pair of Forest Red-tailed Black-Cockatoos were thought to be breeding in one of the Cockatubes in Landcare’s backyard. Despite observations of the male feeding the female above the Cockatube and she then disappearing into the Cockatube for most of the day, she was unfortunately gone a couple of days later. The observation was downgraded to the pair simply checking out the nest, a behaviour called “prospecting”.
