Healthy Habitats. An Update from Landcare SJ Officer Kristy Gregory

Another great partnership between LandcareSJ and the Shire of SJ.

Healthy Habitats

I have just now helped Dr Penny Hollick complete the final report to the State NRM Office,  and I have been amazed when quantifying what has been achieved on-ground, in actively looking after bushland on private property. I thought the following most noteworthy to share:

Healthy Habitats has contributed significantly to the aims of the Shire of Serpentine Jarrahdale’s Biodiversity Strategy. Of the remaining original vegetation in the Shire, 4500ha is located on private property, and 493ha of this is currently protected through Healthy Habitats, representing 11%.

Biodiversity Strategy

In addition, one of the aims of the Shire’s Biodiversity Strategy is to “Protect and manage a connected network of over 4000 hectares of local natural areas throughout the Shire so that they are found to be healthy and resilient in 2050.” The 493ha protected through Healthy Habitats accounts for 12.5% of this 4000ha target. This target was set in 2008 to achieve by 2050, and so the Healthy Habitats Program has achieved a remarkable result within 8 years, particularly given that it is one relatively small recommendation within the whole Strategy and doesn’t take into account the Local Natural Areas on public land which are under the direct control of Local or State Government.

All members to the program are voluntary and willing participants – we often don’t have to approach landholders, they usually approach us! That is, with a need to get support and advice to look after their bushland.
