Landcare SJ takes Cocktube’s to the Perth Royal Show

For the very first time Landcare SJ constructed an interactive stall for the Perth Royal Show.

In partnership with the Serpentine Jarrahdale Food and Farm Alliance (SJ FFA), the stall showcased the Cockatube artificial nesting box for the black cockatoos, promotion of the Food and Farm Fest event on May 5th 2018 by displaying local produce on the stall, and was decorated with local native species supplied by Australian Native Nurseries.

The stall was staffed the whole week by a group of enthusiastic volunteers Landcare SJ Staff, Shire Officers and SJ FFA Members interacting with thousands of people everyday as they explored the Centenary Pavilion ‘Walk Through WA’ exhibits.

SJ was promoted as a great place to visit, so close to the city and with an abundance of natiral beaty, outdoor activities and fantastic fresh produce, including the Royal Show award winning Olive Oil from Tarralea Grove.

The SJ FFA photoboard with a scarecrow and chicken was a huge hit with children and adults alike – many just couldn’t walk past without a photo, even those manning the stall got a photo.

Landcare SJ Executive Officer Francis Smit says ” The Perth Royal Show was an excellent opportunity to showcase local goods and produce, and to share what our locality has with the rest of Western Australia.”

The Centenary Pavilion was  set up so show goers could taste, touch and smell their way around the different regions of Western Australia. Manned mostly by regional volunteer groups many were interested in the Cockatube, Landcare SJ’s artificial nesting hollow for the endangered black cockatoos, as they had already had experience producing artificial homes for smaller native species in their area. We may be seeing the Cocktube spread across more areas of Western Australia soon.

Landcare SJ would like to thank all the volunteers that helped to staff the stall over the week of the Perth Royal Show
